Here are 2 Helpful Things you can do as you prepare to file a roof insurance claim:
1. Call A Roofing Contractor Experienced in Insurance Claims
I know we may be biased, but this may be the single most important thing you do. Because finding the right roofing company can be the difference between a delightful or horrible claim experience. Your roofer should know about the different policies, the claims process, and how to work with the adjuster. Much of this knowledge comes with time and experience.
Some articles will recommend you take pictures or climb on the roof, but don’t do that. We don’t encourage homeowners to climb on the roof for your own safety. Instead, have us come and take photos and we can review the damage with you.
The role of the roofer contractor is to your advocate during the claims process. We will usually inspect your roof prior to a meeting with the adjuster so we can assess the damage beforehand. A reputable roofer should be able to provide extra eyes on surveying damage and understand the supplementing process. At best, they should also be able to tell you whether or not your damage warrants a claim.
2. Understand Your Policy Coverage
Your insurance carrier should be able to tell you what your policy covers in plain English.
Certain insurance carriers also have a statute of limitations on when to use your claim money- usually a year. Your roofing company should be able to help you review those items and create a game plan that works in your favor.
Note: One of the biggest misunderstandings of the roof insurance claim process is being able to “make money” on your insurance claim. If a roofer conspires with you to make money, it should raise red flags on integrity.
Next, you’ll want to know whether you have an RCV or ACV policy. This will affect the overall cost and quality of the roof installation.
Lastly, we always recommend that you keep a folder to organize your paperwork. There are already a lot of documents involved and more so if your mortgage company is involved.
