Asphalt Shingles: Learn About The Different Types
Asphalt Shingles: Learn About The Different Types
In the majority of the roof replacements we use asphalt shingles. The general construction of an asphalt shingle includes a fiberglass or cellulose mat and a composite for the layers. These layers are comprised of primarily asphalt and other minerals instead of a single source (metal or cedar roofs).
But did you know there are a different types of asphalt shingles and even sub-categories within those main categories? The majority of manufacturers carry these 4 main categories:
3-Tab or Three-Tab
3-tab asphalt shingles are basic, one-dimensional shingle. These are the most affordable type of shingles and with the right conditions, can last you several years. These shingles have a flat, clean appearance and are the most economical choice. Three-tab shingles use fewer layers of fiberglass weave and therefore, the life span can be shorter.
Architectural Shingles
Architectural shingles are dimensional shingles AKA “Laminate Shingles”. In fact, the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association says that these type are the most widely used among all roofing contractors. Due to the multiple layers in the shingles and the overlapping effect, these shingles can withstand far more damage than 3-tab shingles. Most of these types of shingles are known for their 30-year life span and in the industry roofers call them “30-year laminate” shingles. These weigh and cost more than the 3-tab shingles, consequently, they last longer and have a longer warranty period.
Aside from function, these look great and come in lot of styles and colors to complement any home.
Luxury/Premium Shingles
Much like the architectural shingles, these shingles are multi-dimensional and aesthetically pleasing. As far as asphalt shingles go, these are as premium as you get. They’re constructed with one more layer than architectural shingles which makes them stronger and more durable. The appearance of these shingles replicate other premium roofing products for a fraction of the cost.
These luxury shingles are usually an upgrade for most homeowners, although some insurance carriers offer a discount to subsidize the cost.
How do you know which shingle to use?
As you now know, there are so many varieties of asphalt shingles so the next obvious question is what to use. Simple. Your roofing contractor will normally choose whichever type of shingle was previously on the roof. Part of our job is to correctly identify the shingle and get your carrier to pay for the correct one (if it’s an insurance job.)
One other factor that determines that determines which type of shingle to use is the neighborhood covenants. While most covenants won’t specify the type or brand, they will often give a minimum weight. Obviously, the more premium the shingle, the heavier it weighs. A reputable roofer should know these two factors before ordering and installing any product. (We’ve heard of horror stories where HOAs have forced roofing companies to tear apart a roof that didn’t meet the requirements. Yikes!)
Summary
It’s important to pick a roofing company that knows the different type of asphalt shingles that are available. Knowledge in the material can help the homeowner make an informed decision on which type of asphalt shingle to use. More importantly, these distinctions make a big difference when supplementing your insurance claim. A good roofer would know exactly the type of shingle on your roof so they can make claim on the correct type.
