Roof Replacement Preparation- What Homeowners Should Know
Getting a new roof installed is a big project on your home so there are some things to know as we get ready to work.As your roofing contractors, there are several things on our end that we need to do and likewise as a homeowner, there are also things that you need to do to ensure a smooth process. Here are some roof replacement preparation tips.
BEFORE
- Before we start hammering away, we need to drop off the materials for your new roof to ensure our team has everything they need when they arrive. Please make sure your driveway is completely cleared so our supplier can drop off the materials without issue.
- Move vehicles that you will need out into the street as the driveway will be unusable because of material/roofing debris. Your garage/driveway will be inaccessible for approximately 24-48 hours so plan accordingly. This is one of the most important things to do for your roof replacement preparation.
DURING
Payment
On the day your project beings, we will collect the initial payment for the ACV (actual cash value) of the roofing line items provided by your insurance company less the deductible. This amount is outlined in your adjuster’s report AKA Scope of Work.
Precautions
Your new roof installation is a large project. As such, there are several precautions you’ll need to take:
- Secure all items on walls and shelves so that nothing breaks inside your home during the demolition process.
- The first several hours of demolition can be extremely NOISY with the potential of small debris falling from your roof so please remove all valuable exterior decor. Flower pots, small statues, lawn furniture, fragile items, etc. need to be moved. Please ensure they’re at least 50 feet away from the perimeter of your home (or stored elsewhere).
- If you decide not to move them, we will have to do so in order to avoid property damage. If there are specific items of concern, please let us know.
Driveway
- Ensure your driveway is clear for the entire length of the install so our truck/trailers can park.
- We typically arrive between 7:30/8:00 on the starting day so please ensure that all vehicles are out of the garage by 7:30 AM.
- You may not have access to your driveway or garage for the next 24-48 hours depending on the size of your project so plan accordingly.
Skylights
- If we are replacing a skylight, please put a large blanket or tarp underneath the area of the skylight as dust and debris are certain to fall as we repair/replace it.
- During the install, a project manager will coordinate access within your home so we can ensure the skylight is set squarely in place and/or if we need to return for touchups to the interior.
Pets
We love pets at Mutual Roofing, which is why it’s important to note how your roof installation may impact them.
- In the 24-48 hours we will be working on your home, it may be stressful on your pets so we encourage you to make proper arrangements.
- If there are specific things we need to know about your animals, please let us know.
Safety
Lastly, we make safety a top priority throughout this process and you’ll notice several things we do onsite to ensure our safety along with yours.
- Use caution when entering or exiting your home. We will use safety cones to indicate if we’re working above that area so you can avoid those spots.
- Please ALWAYS wear shoes when walking around the home as there will be debris or work materials during construction.
- We consider this a “closed” worksite for neighbors and friends so hold off on any additional traffic to/from your home.
AFTER
Cleanup
Before our installation crew leaves, they will do a thorough cleaning of your property. Then within 24-48 hours we will send out an additional team member. They will remove any extra materials and perform another magnet rolling (for nails) and cleanup.
Payment
Your insurance will release the remaining funds once all contracted trades are complete. As a result, we will invoice the remaining balance of the work.
