Why You Should Choose a Roofing Company that Supplements
What is Supplementing?
Before we dive in why you should choose a roofing contractor that does supplementing, it helps to understand exactly what it is.
Supplementing is the process of adding charges to an insurance claim for items that were missed, underpaid, or discovered upon working on the home. This is often done through meeting with an adjuster on-site, documenting damages with photos, tedious paperwork, and ultimately getting your insurance carrier to approve and sign off on the supplements.
Two Main Benefits for Choosing a Roofing Contractor That Supplements
Supplementing can be a tedious and administratively burdensome task which is why most roofing companies prefer not to do it or pay little attention to it. There are two main reasons that homeowners can benefit from a roofing contractor that does supplement.
1. Better Work is Done
For instance, let’s say that your adjuster gives you a claim worth $8,000 to replace your roof. You choose a roofing company that accepts that claim amount at face value and then they begin working on your home. As they start, they discover more damages that need repair and usually one of 4 things will happen:
- They decide to go forth in fixing the additional repair and document it in hopes that the insurance company will approve the supplement. Essentially, they hope to do the right thing and get paid for it.
- Do the repair and bill the homeowner for the additional charges by claiming “Your insurance company didn’t cover that issue.” (which means you pay more on top of your deductible)
- They decide to ignore the necessary repair and continue to do the $8,000 worth of work that was agreed upon.
- They do the repair enough and cut corners in other ways to still stay within the $8,000 claim.
Insurance companies prefer to have the supplements sorted out BEFORE a roofing contractor starts work on the home and obviously, the roofing contractor prefers to know that they will be paid for everything before they get started. (There are some exceptions where damage can’t be determined until roof demolition, etc.)
As you can see, due diligence on the side of the roofing company helps align everyone in the process and covers the homeowner from “unforeseen” costs and ensures the quality of the material/work is not hindered.
2. Maximizing Benefits
When a roofing company is knowledgeable about supplementing, we are making sure that no money is left on the table. We have a very specific, thorough way to inspect properties and our diligence means you’re owed what is due. It’s very important to note that our goal in this process is to ensure you’re getting the full benefit of your home owner’s policy and not to fraud the insurance carriers. There’s a very fine line between being ethical and fraudulent and it’s one that Mutual Roofing vows not to cross.
What Supplementing Looks Like at Mutual Roofing
We are a homeowner’s biggest advocate when it comes to the insurance claims process. Here are a few recent examples of claims we have supplemented to the benefit of the homeowner.
We’ve had an instance where a homeowner was initially approved of a roof and when we surveyed the property, we were also able to find additional damage in the windows and siding of the home. After some back and forth with the insurance carrier, we were able to get them to agree and approve to replace everything on the exterior of that home.
The homeowner went later on to sell that home and as you can imagine, they were extremely pleased that the work we did on the front end resulted in a easy, quick sell of their home.
Another homeowner was initially approved of a $3,500 roof repair. We inspected the home and documented the damages with several photos. Nick Woodard, Director of Operations, meticulously copied the line items of the claims and was able to find several items that were missed. All told, we were able to get the insurance carrier to approve of $62,000. As you can imagine, the homeowner was pleased with the results of our attention to detail.
