Before Contacting Your Insurance Carrier (Two Things You Should Do)
When a storm hits, the first thought is to call your insurance company. But wait! There are a few things you should do before contacting your insurance carrier. Here’s what we recommend.
Document the Damage
While the damage is fresh, take as many pictures as you can. This include everything on the exterior of your home including siding, windows, gutters, and the roof (from the ground). Surprisingly, many people don’t realize how much is covered by your home insurance policy.
In additional to your own dated photos, we encourage you find external sources of evidence of a storm. This includes newspaper articles or stories about the recent storm. You would especially need this if you don’t plan to file until a later day and need sufficient proof.
Contact a Roofing Contractor
We know what you’re thinking, we’re trying to toot our own horn. And you wouldn’t be wrong. But seriously, here’s why you might want to contact a roofing contractor before calling your insurance.
We are an advocate for the homeowner. We’re knowledgeable on what to look for in damage and are familiar with how different insurance carriers process claims. As such, we can climb on the roof and document damage (in addition to your own photos) to present to an insurance adjuster.
Mutual Roofing doesn’t always push to file a claim. In fact, if we find the damage to be insufficient we will always advise against filing a claim. We’re not claim-happy roofing contractors.
By contacting us first, you may realize that you don’t need to file a claim and there’s no harm, no foul.

Summary
Homeowners may still prefer to speak with their insurance carrier/agent first when a storm hits. We get that. However, we do want you to realize that you have options on the path you take. You can document what you see first and then contact a roofing contractor for an extra sets of eyes.
