I know many of us are excited Spring is finally here and the snow days are long past us. (We hope.) As of earlier in March, snowfall totals have exceeded 50 inches which is about 29 inches more than the average snowfall totals.

All this snow, rain, and changing temperature has rattled our state infrastructure. The Omaha roads are experiencing terrible potholes that have caused major damage to vehicles. So much so, the city is actually taking claims as discussed here.

Additionally, with the large snowfall amounts coupled with rain and warming temperatures, several areas in our state have experienced devastating floods. The effects of the flood are felt through every part of our state and communities.

Regarding roofs, we have had more calls about ice dams than ever before because of the amount of snowfall, below freezing temps, and downspouts blockages. So what does that mean for your roof and gutters?

What Homeowners Can Do This Spring

With temperatures nearly in the 70s later this week, it’ll be a perfect time to go outside and do some minor maintenance.

This includes:

• Check your downspouts to make sure they’re attached properly and pointed away from your home
• For buried downspouts, make sure no mulch, rock, leaves or other materials are obstructing the flow.
• Clean Your Gutters or call a Roofing Company who can do that for you
• Check for missing shingles in your yard
• Take down your Christmas lights if you haven’t already

When You Should Call a Roofing Contractor

While many basic maintenance things can be performed by a homeowner, there are many things that will require professional help. Here are some signs of when you should call a roofing company:

• When you see leaks either on the interior or exterior walls or ceiling
• When you can tell from the ground level there is obvious shingle damage (whether from wind, ice dam removal, etc.)
• Unresolved water issues causing damage to your foundation
• You notice a slew of silverfish invading your home (they’re attracted to damp areas, particularly wood shake roofs)
• Your roof just looks like its in bad shape
